 JOB SUMMARY

Packaging Manager will play a key role in the Package Engineering department to support new product launches and product line maintenance For the NARS brand, from design brief to the product launch as well as life cycle management including post launch quality feedback.

 

The Packaging Manager will be part of the launch team and lead Packaging efforts and ensure all the technical aspects, from functionality, manufacturability, aesthetics, safety, quality, innovation/creativity, recyclability and sustainability, conform to Shiseido corporate guidelines.

 

The individual will be required to drive their own projects, while supporting and coaching other engineers to ensure the required Packaging tasks are executed in a timely manner. The Manager must have the ability to adapt to fast-changing environments and rely on engineering instincts to find cost effective and timely solutions. The position will require an individual to have the willingness to take risks and to consider novel approaches to improve the organization's competitive position.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO 

  • Brand Identity Management
    • You will be able to communicate package concepts, ideas, and risk to cross functional teams and leadership
    • You have keen eye for attention to detail to understand the visual and target user experience of the brand.
  • Packaging Bill of Materials
    • Bill of Materials (BOM) creation/changes for new/existing products i.e.: new products, artwork updates, material changes.
    • BOM management comes from gathering all necessary information from Packaging brief, consolidating the FG codes and WIPs with all component generic/shaded codes.
  • Component standards & Range boards
    • You can manage component standards and review/approve/distribute to the key affiliates for record keeping.
    • You can drive the development of color matching components and creating  color and defect range boards bridging the conversation between brand partners and suppliers.
  • Primary Packaging Development
    • You will review and approve technical drawings for stock and custom tooled items.
    • You will perform stack up analysis where needed
    • You will discuss and dissect samples with brand holders
  • Secondary Packaging Development
    • You will coordinate with external vendors to create die lines for liners, cartons, and kits ( if needed)
    • You will evaluate white samples.
    • You will approve final secondary sizes with brand holders.
  • Tertiary Packaging Development
    • You will verify and coordinate Tertiary specification with Shiseido Manufacturing site and or Contract Manufacturing partners.
    • You will identify palletization patterns for existing and new products using CAPE software
  • Artwork management
    • You will manage artwork changes by providing new codes, BOM updates, facilitating mechanical routing and supplier Proof approval
    • You will import die lines into digital artwork system.
    • You will verify technical elements of production artwork and pre-production proofs.
  • Color Development
    • You will route color targets for molded and printed components (color, texture, finish) with suppliers.
    • You will manage the approval process of produced components with creative/marketing teams.
  • Project Management
    • You can oversee multiple launch projects with limited supervision and support.
    • You have a general understanding of full project timelines and how packaging related milestones link to other key due dates. 
    • You will be responsible for managing workflow of key milestone packaging related dates and provide updates to project manager and cross functional partners.
  • Packaging Specifications
    • You will create and/or revise new component specifications to suppliers (primary, secondary, and tertiary) in our specification system.
    • You will identify the relevant test methods (components & finished goods) for the Packaging lab to conduct.
    • You can read supplier data and technical reports to validate new components.
    • You will issue Fill and assembly (FG specification) to the respective filling location.
  • Engineering & Testing
    • You will attend line trials and Finished Good production start-ups as needed
    • You will package Quality issue resolution (label adhesion, aesthetic defects, leakage, etc…)
    • You will schedule testing with the Packaging lab as needed
  • People Management
    • You can supervise temp employees, co-ops, junior packaging individuals
    • You can define and support the individual development plan for each direct report
    • Your responsibilities include recruitment, training, support and employee performance appraisal
    • You will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

 

WHO YOU ARE 

  • You have a BS + degree in Package Engineering or another Engineering discipline (mechanical, chemical, material science)
  • CPP or PE certification is recommended
  • You have 7+ years of industry-related experience with the ability to take on a supervisory role
  • You understand molding processes, molds, resins decorations and package assembly methods
  • You have basic knowledge with CAD software and 3D printing
  • You have comprehension of Marketing briefs, setting expectations for package design feasibility
  • You will Manage projects with autonomy, escalation when needed and decision making when appropriate
  • You must understand the total product development process, detailed launch timelines, manufacturing execution, supplier development process in a context of global footprint
  • You must be highly organized
  • Must be PC literate and competent with Microsoft Office applications
  • You must be aware of cross function and regional impact of decisions
  • You must appreciate  the importance of on-time and quality delivery of projects to business partners
  • You have excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal, written, good listening skills, providing support with trust, respect and transparency)
  • You can have technical discussions with suppliers, challenging status quo and providing technical recommendations
  • You can present to Sr. Management concisely, and provide thorough summaries of critical issues & recommendations
  • You can lead cross-functional skills with a sense of humility when communicating to Japanese culture
  • You have entrepreneurial spirit: taking initiative and drive clarity and resolution
  • You can drive projects with full ownership, and hold accountability on team members to ensure all steps of the timeline are completed.
  • You can read and understand a 2D and 3D technical drawing
  • You can adapt to fast-changing environments
  • You understand problem Solving: ability to predict, recognize and define meaningful corrective actions to problems, including a good understanding of Packaging defects
  • You are willing to take risks and to consider new approaches to improve the organization's competitive position

The base pay for this position may vary based on geographic location. Actual base pay offered will be based on several factors including job-specific knowledge, education, skills, and depth of experience. In addition to base pay, we may offer additional forms of compensation as components of a total compensation package, including participation in our bonus program which features the ability to overachieve, in addition to a full range of competitive benefits.
