Job Summary: 

The Engineer I, Sustainable Development will be responsible for supporting the sustainable commitments of Shiseido Americas. Acting as a link between Operations and the Brand teams, the role works to support all brands by helping them to reduce their carbon footprint / comply with HQ-developed sustainable goals through the execution of Life Cycle Assessments (utilizing company-licensed software) along with aggregating data from the packaging and brand teams to support the sustainability goals.

The role works closely with Product Development, Package Engineering, Procurement, Manufacturing, and the Brand teams in the US, bringing together all sustainability efforts, presenting solutions and insights to support the execution of sustainable packaging.

The individual will be required to drive his/her projects and solicit other team members to ensure the required Packaging tasks are performed in a timely manner. The engineer must have the ability to adapt to fast-changing environments. The position will require an individual to have the willingness to take risks and to consider new approaches to improve the organization's competitive position. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Support the identification of specific drivers for sustainability in collaboration with leads of Package Engineering, Production, Product Development, Procurement, and Supply Chain through conducting Life Cycle Assessments using the company licensed software.
  • Support the development of Sustainable Goals through data collection from Package Engineering and NPD, understanding all aspects of each project to understand what sustainable elements were proposed, accepted/rejected, and executed. When issues occur documenting the reasoning and developing insights as to the key road blocks the organization is facing when it comes to sustainable packaging.
  • Project Management 
    • Ability to handle multi-task launch projects with supervision and support from Director, Sustainable Development 
    • Meet timeline due dates for all LCAs/projects 
  • Packaging Specifications 
    • Review component specifications from suppliers and engineers (primary, secondary, and tertiary) 
    • Identify risks and recommendations regarding sustainable technology such as PCR, bio-resins, molecular PCR etc.

Qualifications & Competencies: 

  • BS degree in Package Engineering
  • 0 – 1 years of experience + internship or Co-Op
  • Must be PC literate and competent with Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel and PowerPoint). 
  • Responsible for initiating and resolving queries from other functions in a timely manner and communicating, escalating issues when appropriate. 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal, written, good listening skills, providing support with trust, respect, and transparency) 
  • Entrepreneurial spirit: taking initiative and drive clarity and resolution. 
  • Ability to adapt to fast-changing environments. 
  • Problem Solving: ability to predict, recognize and define meaningful corrective actions to problems. 
  • Must be organized, detail oriented, resourceful, and able to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Ability to work independently with cross-functional teams in fast moving/changing environment
  • Understanding of packaging specifications with the ability to identify risks
  • Have a thorough knowledge of package development process.  Possess language and technical skills to interact with suppliers, engineers, and designers
  • Use experience, knowledge, and high-level communication skills to help integrate new acquisitions into product/ package development corporate processes
  • Ability to develop Life Cycle Analysis LCA reporting using Sustainable tools such as PIQET or SPICE to measure/track/report on sustainability trend.
