Associate Manager, Toxicologist & Product Safety

The overall function of this position is to be a subject-matter-expert in support of the Innovation Center’s business strategies and in the execution of the calendar product development for the global brands; NARS, Bare Minerals, Laura Mercier, Buxom, Drunk Elephant and other Shiseido owned brands assigned to AIC including Contract Manufacturing (CM) projects from Safety & Micro Assurance point of view.

 

The person will be responsible for managing 1 employee to handle our Contract Manufacturing business operations, handling safety and micro assessment.  Need to have good communication and collaboration skills and the ability to interact with internal R&D team including the Global Innovation Center in Japan and cross-functional teams such as Technical Project Leaders in AIC, SAC-Reg, OPD and Product Development/Marketing.

 

The person needs to have knowledge of toxicity and hands-on experience with Cosmetic Safety Assurance.  Possess the advanced ability to analyze and interpret data in order to make timely technical decisions with Management.  The person also is responsible for supporting official Q&A on any safety and micro related matters in SAC.   Successful candidate must possess all necessary toxicology certifications to be able to sign-off on a dossier.   

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the product development project from safety and micro assurance point of view, for assigned business operations.    Provide scientific and technical due diligence for business development. 
  • Use data, test results, own personal toxicology expertise and standard protocols to take actions, resolve issues and/or to lead decision making and support project milestone - not only for safety but also for product innovation.
  • Manage and operate multiple projects/activities and balance urgency with importance for conflicting tasks. 
  • Build and maintain close partnerships and open channels of communication with Technical Project Leaders and Managers on projects and other issues relevant to launch projects.
  • Conduct safety assessments for raw ingredients and formulations.  Provide evaluation of conclusions and potential impact of study results on project milestones/strategy. 
  • Effectively communicate non-clinical findings and their relevance to project teams and/or management. 
  • Organize materials and prepare drafts for Cosmetic Product Safety Reports.
  • Manage and operate toxicological and microbiological testing, as needed.  Provide evaluation of conclusions and potential impact of study results on project milestones/strategy. 
  • Provide expertise in Toxicology to apply technical knowledge and abilities to ensure all safety assurance are performed in a compliant manner. Complete all reviews in accordance with required release timelines.
  • Evaluation of safety-related consumer complaints/analysis of post-market surveillance/post-launch monitoring data
  • Manage the documentation for safety related issues such as post marketing surveillances (PMS).
  • Collaborate with global team to ensure the safety in use of raw materials as well as formulations.
  • Develop additional databases and organize information, as needed
  • Be a mentor for employees.  Empowering them to develop experiences and formal learning strategies which support them in their career journey

 

Working Relationships/Key Stakeholders:

  • AIC Internal team such as Technical Project Leaders, Formulation Group, Research Control & Operation Group, Technical Information Group, CM Management Group
  • AIC external team such as SAC-Reg, QA, OPD, PD and CMs.  
  • Related contract research organizations (CROs).
  • Work as a safety group member among global Shiseido Innovation Center.
  • Be/become a member of relevant professional groups (e.g., SOT, PCPC-SRTC).

 

Qualifications & Competencies: 

 

  • 3-5 years in toxicity and safety assurance in cosmetics and personal care products.
  • MS/PhD in toxicology or relevant certification as DABT, ERT, or ACVP, pharmacology, biology, or related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the cosmetics/personal care products industry, consulting, contract research organization, raw materials industry, or other relevant experience
  • Must possess all necessary toxicology certifications to be able to sign-off on a dossier.   
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to fluidly manage and apply both people-management skills and technical expertise
  • Demonstrated competency in interpreting toxicology data 
  • Awareness of global cosmetic regulations
  • Strong organizational/project management skills
  • Good collaborator and communicator in a global matrixed structure and a multicultural environment.
  • Able to independently work with, manage and motivate a team.
  • Flexible, customer- and results-oriented.
  • Capable of handling complex issues and solving problems with general guidance. 
  • Able to perform under pressure on projects with short timelines or multiple projects with the same launch dates. Complete all work in a timely manner.
