Job Summary:

The Packaging Lab Manager will play a key role in the Operations Packaging department to support new product launches for all Shiseido brands. The ability to work in cross-functional teams and to understand the Shiseido brand’s needs will be key for this role.

The Manager will oversee and manage testing needs for all Packaging developments and to ensure that all packaging aspects, such as form-fit-function evaluation, functional testing, compatibility testing (interaction between package and formula), safety, and an overall quality assessment to ensure that products conform to internal specifications and requirements.

The individual will be expected to manage a lab team (up to 5 members) and to drive his/her own process improvement projects. Another key activity is to support team members to share information and accurately report test results in a timely manner. The Manager must have the ability to adapt to fast-changing environments and business needs.

This position will require partnership with cross-functional teams within and outside of Operations, communication with senior management, assessment of risks, to consider new approaches and processes to improve the organization's competitive position.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee Packaging Testing and Validation
    • Maintain, update and disposition test requests to meet timing expectations
    • Provide reports and feedback to requestors in a timely manner, especially if there are questions or issues with test requests
    • Manage the day-to-day workload of the team and ensure the proper resources are allocated where needed
    • Gain alignment and communicate testing issues to the requestor, formulator, Packaging management and ultimately the Brand team
    • Be able to use available information and data to assess risks, provide reports and able to make pass or fail decisions for all test reports


  • Integrate Home Office (GIC) Testing Requirements and Team Training
    • Responsible for assessing and integrating test protocols and methods received from the Home Office in Japan
    • Perform and / or ensure proper training for lab personnel
    • Ensure compliance to testing methods and ensure accuracy of testing data used for reporting


  • Project Management
    • Ability to oversee multiple projects and make decisions with limited supervision
    • Meet timeline due dates for all required Packaging testing based on requested timing
    • Push information and communicate delays in a timely manner to all key stakeholders


  • People Management
    • Responsibilities include recruitment, training, support, addressing performance issues and performing employee performance appraisals
    • Define, coach and support the team member’s development plans
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
    • Drive projects with 100% responsibility and hold team members accountable to ensure all testing methods are followed
