Job Summary:
The overall function of this position will be responsible for planning, organizing, and developing new formulae and reformulation, technologies, raw materials, testing methodologies and claims in order to develop new or to improve existing products for NARS and Drunk Elephant brands and other brand partners with the support of supervisor. The chemist will work independently or with minimal supervision in a team environment and handle multiple projects. Need to have a good communication skills and ability to interact with cross-functional teams such as NPD/NPC, Manufacturing, Packaging, Quality and Product Development/Marketing. The Chemist will also be responsible for preparing and delivering presentations to internal/external groups and brands.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop new formulas and reformulate existing products under supervisor direction. Maintain detailed laboratory notebooks and accurate entry of formula information into database (Coptis). Actively participate in the resolution of formula issues encountered during development.
- Conduct stability testing (color, texture, odor, pH, viscosity, particle size, etc.) and special testing (rheology, microscope emulsion check, centrifuge, etc.). Update results on charts in the project folders to allow summary of data for review at each test period. Submit samples to PD/Marketing, follow up and obtain approvals.
- Understand, follow, and adhere to project cost objectives and timelines developed for each project. Follow requirements of the new product development process and follow through with action plans to meet the goals and timeline of the project. Support adherence to project timelines aligned with NPD/NPC.
- Attend pilot, machine test study and manufacturing trial runs of products, working with Process Development Group. Attend pre/post pilot and machine test and pre/post-trial run meetings.
- Prepare PTI for all approved formulation (includes formula, process, specification, stability, micro and safety assurance, compatibility, regulatory compliance status).
- Interact with raw material vendors and other industry representatives to further expand on the understanding of their products, technologies, and services. Utilize external research organizations to develop new technology for transfer to R&D department via presentation and/or reports. Search & evaluate new interesting raw materials for future projects.
- Develop prospective projects for NARS and Drunk Elephant brands in partnership with other AIC groups and SAI.

Qualifications & Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or equivalent science
- Able to work on project with minimal supervision.
- Able to manage multiple projects and adhere to the given timeline.
- Able to work with short and competing deadlines most especially for high complexity projects
- Minimum 3-5 years in cosmetics/personal care product formulation with emphasis on Skincare and Sun care.
- Knowledge of emulsion technology and the chemistry and mechanism of skincare and sun care actives.
- Motivated and works well in teams and independently.
- Requires strong communication, writing and presentation skills.
- Must be able to collaborate with groups outside R&D to help address product / formula issues.
