Job Summary:
The overall function of this position will be responsible for planning, organizing, and developing new formulae, technologies, raw materials, testing methodologies and claims in order to develop new or to improve existing products for NARS, Drunk Elephant and Shiseido global brands. The person is able to work independently in a team environment and handle multiple projects. Need to have a good communication skills and ability to interact with cross-functional teams such as Process Development Team, TIG, Regulatory, Safety, Quality, SAI Manufacturing, Packaging and Marketing. The Chemist will also be responsible for preparing and delivering presentations to internal groups and Marketing teams.
The person responsibilities also include developing detailed project plan, delivering project on time within scope by following department set guidelines.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop new formulae, shade matching, and reformulate existing products under management direction. Responsible for the maintenance of accuracy of information in database (Coptis) and active participation in the resolution of formula issues.
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize.
- Conduct stability testing (i.e., tracking stability (texture, odor, pH, viscosity, etc.), update results charts, and summarize data for review at each test period).
- Submit samples to marketing for new formula and new shades development, follows up and obtains approvals.
- Add formulation information and cost on COPTIS.
- Prepare PTI for all approved new formulation, including formula, process, specification sheet, and stability report. Attend manufacturing trial runs of products, works with PDG and Brand PD team.
- Understand, follow, and adhere to project cost objectives and timelines developed by supervisor and detailed for each project. Follow requirements of the new product development process and follow through with action plans to meet the goals and timeline of the project. Track project timelines to ensure targets are achieved.
- Search & evaluate new interesting raw materials for future projects.
- Interact with raw material vendors and other industry representatives to further expand on the understanding of their products, technologies, and services. Utilize professional relationships to further expand and bring appropriate technologies in house.
- Monitor competitors’ patent and try to avoid infringement. Also, communicate with internal IP team closely to apply patent if needed.
- Coaching and mentoring of junior chemists in their team.
- Engage in utilize external research organizations for developing new technology and should transfer technology to the R&D department via presentation and/or reports.
- Seek out and read industry literature as it relates to new assignments and technologies.
- Initiates continuous improvement plan when requested/necessary.
- Support/Assist the team with Technical Risk Assessment Process when needed

Qualifications & Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or equivalent science.
- Minimum 3-5years in Personal Care product formulation. Preferably with color cosmetic Lip category formulation
- Knowledge of industry trends.
- Motivated and works well in teams and independently.
- Requires strong organization, communication and writing skills.
- Must be able to collaborate with groups outside R&D to help address product / formula issues.
- Able to work on project independently and take extra step to get the job done
- Able to handle any type of product formulation.
- Able to work with short timelines, manage multiple projects with competing dates.
